The Supreme Court on Thursday clarified that the Air India Dreamliner pilots cannot be held responsible for the 12 June crash. SC clarified that the probe by Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) into Air India Flight 17 crash is aimed at finding the "cause".
The probe into the Air India crash was not meant to "apportion blame" but to safeguard passengers against future tragedies. The June 12 plane crash claimed the lives of 229 passengers and 12 crew members.
Appearing for the Centre, Tushar Mehta told the justices that the govt "understands the feelings" of the father of the pilot of Air India plane. The clarification by the Supreme Court came after Pushkarraj Sabbarwal, after of one of the pilots, filed a petition seeking independent probe.
The 91-year-old father of Commander Sumeet Sabharwal, filed a plea after several reports blamed pilots for the crash. Pushkarraj Sabbarwal alleged that the probe carried out by AAIB’s was "flawed". The petition came after several media reports printed the alleged verbal exchange between the pilots caught on the Black Box.
