New Delhi: The newly appointed US Ambassador-designate to India, Sergio Gor met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Saturday. The meeting focused on various key areas of bilateral cooperation, including defence, trade, technology, and critical minerals.
Gor presented Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a signed photograph of himself alongside US President Donald Trump at the White House. The picture showcases a handwritten message from Trump that read, “Mr Prime Minister, you are great.”
Following the meeting, Prime Minister Modi expressed optimism about deepening the India-US partnership. “Glad to receive Mr Sergio Gor, Ambassador-designate of the US to India. I’m confident that his tenure will further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership,” Modi said in a post on X.
“President Trump considers Prime Minister Modi a great and personal friend. We discussed bilateral issues including defence, trade, and technology, as well as the importance of critical minerals to both our nations. Under the strong leadership of President Donald J. Trump and Prime Minister Modi, I am optimistic about the days ahead for both our countries," said Gor.
Before meeting the Prime Minister, Gor also held discussions with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. He is accompanied on his six-day visit by Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources Michael J Rigas.
The 38-year-old envoy, a close aide of President Trump and a prominent figure in the “Make America Great Again” campaign, has also been appointed as Trump's special envoy for South and Central Asia.
Relations between India and the United States have recently faced turbulence after Washington doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent and imposed an additional 25 per cent duty on India's imports of Russian crude oil. India has termed the move "unfair and unreasonable."
However, recent phone conversations between Modi and Trump have also hopes of easing trade frictions. Both nations have resumed negotiations on a long-pending trade deal. Gor, during his Senate confirmation hearing had called the current tension a mere "hiccup."
