Guwahati: A shocking stunt performed on India’s longest bridge has triggered outrage in Assam’s Tinsukia district. A video going viral on social media shows a young man hanging from the railing of the Dr Bhupen Hazarika Setu, also known as the Dhola-Sadiya Bridge, and doing pull-ups, while his friends capture the stunt on their phones.
The bridge, which stretches 9.15 km across the River Lohit, is a vital link between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The risky behaviour has raised alarm over safety on such key public infrastructure.
According to an eyewitness, the act was not an isolated incident — several youths participated in performing stunts on the bridge.
Local residents and social organisations have condemned the behaviour, calling it both life-threatening and irresponsible. They are demanding strict action from the Tinsukia district administration to prevent such reckless acts in the future.
A local said that this could have been fatal, not just for the individual, but also poses a risk to the safety of the structure itself. The authorities must act strictly against those involved, they added.
Citizens fear that if such stunts go unchecked, they could lead to accidents or even inspire copycat behaviour.
So far, no official statement has been issued by the Tinsukia police or the district administration.
The Dhola-Sadiya Bridge, also known as the Dr Bhupen Hazarika Setu, was inaugurated in 2017. The Rs 2,056 crore bridge is named after the iconic Assamese singer Bhupen Hazarika, who hailed from Sadiya. It is 3.55 km longer than Mumbai’s Bandra-Worli Sea Link and plays a crucial role in connecting remote regions of Northeast India.
