New Delhi: India is gearing up for another record-breaking mission on November 2, 2025, as the Indian Space Research Organisation will launch its heaviest communication satellite, CMS-03, which is code-named GSAT-7R. From the Sriharikota’s Satish Dhawan Space Centre, the satellite will be carried by the mighty LVM3-M5 rocket, which was used to help destination moon Chandrayaan. This will serve to expand the country’s space-based communication as well as defense systems.

Weighing around 4,410 kilograms, CMS-03 is among the heaviest satellites ISRO has ever built. It’s designed to boost India’s communication and defense systems, particularly for the Indian Navy. Once in orbit, the satellite will expand secure communication coverage across the Indian Ocean Region and provide better connectivity to remote parts of the country.

The CMS-03 satellite will make communication in C band, Extended C band and Ku band possible, providing quick pathways to obtain voice, data, and video. These improvements will support communication for ships, submarines and aircraft at distances far from shore. The satellite will also help civilian agencies communicating when out of the area of conventional network operations.

CMS-03 is being launched to replace India’s GSAT-7 (Rukmini), which has been operating for more than ten years. The new satellite is expected to have more advanced coverage, data transfer capacity, and encryption capabilities, to aid in a range of military operations and maritime surveillance which would rely on secured channel communications.

Watch the launch live

ISRO is live-streaming the launch on YouTube while allowing a limited number of people to watch the event live at the Launch View Gallery in Sriharikota by registering through a link provided below the same. The liftoff of the LVM3 on Sunday would be another feather in the cap of India’s space program, demonstrating how far the country has progressed in developing and sending up its weighty satellites.
