World number one Carlos Alcaraz registered a milestone win in his 100th Grand Slam match and advanced to the last-16 of the Australian Open 2026. Former No.1 Daniil Medvedev clawed back from two sets down to win an epic comeback match against Hungary's Fabian Marozsan.
New Delhi: Top seed Carlos Alcaraz registered a record-equalling win in his 100th Grand Slam match and progressed to the last-16 of the Australian Open 2026 with a straight-sets win over Corentin Moutet at the Rod Laver Arena.
The world number one Spaniard was in top form against the 32nd seed Frenchman, who was swept aside 6-2, 6-4, 6-1 in two hours and five minutes.
Alacarz equals Bjorg's long-standing record on joining century club in Majors
Alacarz, who, alongside Jannik Sinner, is the red-hot favourite to win the year's first Grand Slam, registered his 87th win in Majors to equal the all-time win record of Swedish icon Bjorg, who held the record of most wins in the first 100 Slam matches for several decades.
Alacarz is now level with Bjorg for the best win-loss record (87-13) on joining the Grand Slam century club.
While it was a straightforward win for the Spaniard, Moutet made a useful contribution to make the contest entertaining with 17 drop shots and several lobs over his much-fancied opponent.
Medvedev through after epic comeback win
At the Margaret Court Arena, Daniil Medvedev rolled back the years with a gritty performance as the Russian remarkably rallied from two sets down to beat Hungary's Fabian Marozsan 6-7, 4-6, 7-5, 6-0, 6-3 in a thrilling five-setter that lasted three hours and 43 minutes.
Medvedev, who crashed out in the first round in three straight Grand Slams, booked a last-16 tie against Learner Tien, the young American who ousted him in the second round last year at Melbourne Park.
After falling two sets behind, the former world number one and a three-time Australian Open finalist, got in his groove in the third set and used his serve to great effect to steer clear of his Hungarian opponent.
In women's singles, Kazakh qualifier Yulia Putintseva overcame Turkey's Zeynep Sonmez 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 and the hostile group of Turkish fans at the Kia Arena.
