Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) vice-president Rajeev Shukla has wished a speedy recovery to Indian batter Shreyas Iyer amid his ongoing treatment for a rib cage injury in Australia. Iyer hurt his lower left rib cage while taking an acrobatic catch and suffered a laceration to his spleen during the 3rd ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney (SCG) on Saturday.
The incident took place during the 30th over of Australia's innings in the 3rd ODI, when Iyer ran from backwards point and completed a stunning catch with a perfect leap to dismiss Alex Carey. The Indian batter landed awkwardly on the ground and injured his lower left rib cage in the process.
He was later admitted to a hospital in Sydney after medical scans and evaluation. He had to be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after internal bleeding due to the injury. However, the batter is now out of ICU and is stable, but his condition reportedly remains 'delicate'.
Amid his ongoing recovery, BCCI vice-president Shukla took to X to wish a speedy recovery to the batter, while lauding him for his unwavering spirit and commitment towards the game.
“Wishing @ShreyasIyer15 a quick recovery. His unwavering spirit and commitment to the game are truly admirable. Looking forward to seeing him back on the field soon, stronger than ever,” Shukla wrote in a tweet.
Earlier on Monday, the BCCI provided a medical update to confirm a laceration injury to Iyer's spleen. The board confirmed that the batter is stable and recovering well, while the BCCI medical team, in consultation with doctors in Sydney, is monitoring his progress. The Indian team's doctor is also in Sydney to constantly monitor Iyer's day-to-day progress in his recovery.
Iyer is expected to remain in Sydney till he recovers fully, as the BCCI, the Indian team management and the player's family don't want to rush him into action due to the nature of the injury. Iyer's family members are also expected to reach Sydney soon to be on his side as he undergoes treatment.
He is currently in the scheme of things for India only in ODIs and is expected to return to action in the home series against South Africa next month. However, his participation in the series remains doubtful as it is not known how long it will take for India's ODI vice-captain to recover fully and return to action.
