New Delhi: Pakistan's Mohammed Rizwan faced an embarrassing moment when the wicketkeeper-batter was forced to retire out in the Big Bash League match between Melbourne Renegades and Sydney Thunder at Sydney Showground Stadium on Monday, January 12.
Rizwan was struggling to score with a high strike rate and only managed to hit 26 runs off 23 balls with the help of two boundaries and one maximum at a strike rate of 113.04 before being asked to retire out. The six he smashed during his knock on Monday was his first maximum for the tournament so far.
With that, he also became the first overseas cricketer in BBL history to be retired out. Overall, Rizwan has just managed to score 167 runs in eight matches at a strike rate of 101.82. He was also struggling with timing in the match against the Sydney Thunder, and failed to hit boundaries when the Melbourne Renegades were looking to post a massive target.
He was eventually replaced by Will Sutherland before the start of the 18th over, but he failed as well and got run out on just one. The Renegades posted a 171-run target for the Thunders. Hassan Khan scored 46 runs off 31 balls, while Josh Brown amassed 35 runs off 25 balls. Wes Agar, Ryan Hadley and David Willey picked up two wickets each.
The poor outing in the BBL 2025-26 season means that Rizwan is likely to miss out on Pakistan's squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup. The wicketkeeper-batter, who once was the captain of Pakistan's white-ball team, hasn't played a T20I match since December 2024.
The selectors could only select one of Babar Azam or Rizwan for the T20 World Cup, but both cricketers have failed to score runs in the BBL. Babar has scored 154 runs in eight matches. Both Babar and Rizwan have been out of Pakistan's squad since the 2024 T20 World Cup and also missed the Asia Cup last year.
