New Delhi: Sarfaraz Khan notched up a 206-ball double century against Hyderabad in the Ranji Trophy clash between Mumbai and Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Friday, January 23. He smashed the fifth First-Class double century of his career.

Earlier in the innings, the Mumbai batter completed his 17th First-Class ton and his first of the ongoing 2025–26 season. Amandeep Khare and Anustup Majumdar are the only two batters who have hit more Ranji Trophy hundreds than Sarfaraz since the 2019-20 season. He also became only the third batter to hit a First-Class double ton, List A 150 and T20 century in the same season. Earlier, Daniel Bell Drummond (2016 and 2023) and Alex Hales (2017) achieved the same feat.

Sarfaraz struck 227 runs off 219 balls, smashing 19 boundaries and nine maximums and was eventually removed by CTL Rakshan. His blistering knock helped Mumbai score 560 runs in the first innings. The 28-year-old has been in sensational form lately. He struck a 15-ball fifty against Punjab in the seventh round of the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy, which is the fastest by an Indian in List A cricket.

He broke the record, which was jointly held by Maharashtra's Abhijit Kale, who took 16 balls to complete his fifty against Baroda in 1995, and Baroda's all-rounder Atit Sheth also notched up fifty in 16 balls against Chhattisgarh in 2021.

He finished the tournament as Mumbai’s highest run-getter, scoring 303 runs in six innings at an average of 75.75 and a strike rate of 190.56. Sarfaraz last played a Test match for India in November 2024 against New Zealand, but has continued his brilliant form in the domestic circuit since.

He was Mumbai’s second-highest run-getter in the recent season of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, amassing 329 runs in seven matches at an average of 65.80 and a strike rate of 203.80. Sarfaraz was picked by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at a base price of Rs 75 lakh in the IPL 2026 mini-auction.

Hyderabad 78/2 in 1st innings

Hyderabad got off to a poor start with the bat after the disappointing bowling performance and lost both openers cheaply. Tushar Deshpande dismissed Abhirath Reddy for 4 runs, and Himanshu Singh removed Aman Rao Parala for 7 runs. After their dismissal, Gahlaut Rahul Singh completed his half-century to help Hyderabad recover.
