Rohit Sharma to be sacked as ODI captain? Report reveals big update ahead of Australia tour
Rohit Sharma's captaincy will be the big talking point when the BCCI announces India's squad for the three-match ODI series against Australia.
New Delhi: Rohit Sharma's captaincy will be the massive talking point when the Indian selectors meet on Saturday (October 4) to announce the squad for the three-match ODI series against Australia. The series is scheduled to begin on October 19 in Perth and will be India's first series after their triumph in the Champions Trophy in March 2025.
According to a Cricbuzz report, Rohit and Virat Kohli will be picked in the squad after months of suspense over their future. Both the legendary cricketers have retired from T20I and Test cricket, and last played for India in the 2025 Champions Trophy final. The duo have not played any competitive cricket since the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL), which ended in June.
Rohit Sharma's ODI captaincy in danger?
According to the same report, the selectors are planning to discuss the captaincy with Rohit Sharma directly. Meanwhile, he cleared his fitness test at the BCCI centre of excellence in Bengaluru recently.
India's ODI skipper has publicly spoken about his desire to play the 2027 Cricket World Cup, and has been training with former assistant coach of Team India Abhishek Nayar, who revealed recently on social media that he has lost 10 kg.
He has been India's full-time ODI skipper since December 2022 and led the team in the 2023 Cricket World Cup, where the Men in Blue lost the final to Australia but won 10 consecutive matches before that.
Earlier this year, he also led India to the 2025 Champions Trophy title in an unbeaten campaign. Rohit and Co. also won the 2024 T20 World Cup without losing a single game.
Rohit will be over the age of 40 when the 2027 ODI World Cup begins. Shubman Gill, the vice-captain as well as Test skipper, is considered the favourite to replace him, but reports have also claimed that Shreyas Iyer could be appointed. This meeting will also be the first since RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha joined the selection panel.
