Security arrangements would be tightened around the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi for Day 4 of the Ranji Trophy match between Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir following a deadly blast outside the Red Fort in the national capital on Monday, November 10. The stadium is only a few kilometres away from the spot where an explosion took place on Monday evening.
At least 10 people lost their lives and several others were injured in the blast that took place outside Gate no.1 of the Red Fort (Lal Qila) Metro Station at around 6:55 PM on Monday. The blast took place in a Hyundai i20 car, which was reportedly moving steadily and had passengers inside. The car exploded after stopping at a traffic signal.
The car went up in flames after the blast, while some other vehicles near were also gutted. Several pedestrians and those seated inside the burnt vehicles lost their lives and sustained grave injuries due to the blast. The injured were taken to the LNJP Hospital in Delhi.
In the wake of the attack, the Delhi & District Cricket Association has got in touch with the Delhi police to beef up security measures outside the Arun Jaitley Stadium for the final day of the Ranji match between Delhi & J&K at the venue on Tuesday.
"Security to be beefed up near Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium (renamed Arun Jaitley Stadium) on the final day of the Ranji Trophy match between Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir," DDCA secretary Ashok Sharma told PTI.
"I would be getting in touch with Delhi Police authorities and request them to deploy additional security outside the stadium premises," he added.
A high alert was issued in New Delhi following the deadly blast outside the Red Fort. Several other major cities, including Bengaluru, Mumbai and Kolkata, have been placed on heightened vigilance. The authorities are investigating all angles to determine if the blast was a terrorist attack.
The blast has sent shockwaves across the country. As per the eyewitnesses, there was a massive explosion, the tremors of which were felt by the shopkeepers and the traders in the Chandni Chowk area near the Red Fort. Home Minister Amit Shah visited the blast site before heading to the LNJP Hospital, where he met the injured, who are undergoing treatment.
There were doubts over the completion of the Ranji Trophy match between Delhi & J&K after the deadly blast on Monday. However, DDCA seems to have decided to go ahead and conclude the game amid heightened security at the stadium. J&K need 124 runs with 8 wickets in hand on Day 4 to win the game.
