Shreyas Iyer is stable and is responding to messages, revealed India's T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav. Speaking to reporters at the pre-match press conference ahead of the 1st T20I against Australia at the Manuka Oval in Canberra on Tuesday, Suryakumar provided an update on his injured teammate. Iyer injured his lower left rib cage during the 3rd ODI between India and Australia in Sydney last week.
The team India star landed awkwardly after completing a stunning catch to dismiss Alex Carey and ended up suffering a horrific injury. He was immediately taken to a hospital in Sydney, where scans revealed that he had suffered a laceration on his spleen. The Indian batter had to be admitted to the ICU due to internal bleeding, leaving many concerned about his health.
However, he is out of the ICU now, and his condition remains stable as he continues his path towards recovery. Iyer is still undergoing treatment at the hospital in Sydney, where a team of doctors, including BCCI's team doctor, is constantly monitoring his condition.
When asked about the latest update on Iyer, Suryakumar revealed that the batter is stable and has been replying to text messages. The Indian T20I skipper also confirmed that Iyer is out of danger, but will remain under medical observation for a few more days in Sydney.
"The first day, when I got to know that he was injured, I called him. I got to know that he did not have his phone. So, I called the physio and he told me that he was stable. On day one you cannot be sure of anything. But I have been talking to him over the last two days and he has been replying on phone. If he is replying, it means that he is stable," said Suryakumar.
"He is looking good, the doctors are with him. But he will be under supervision for the next few days. But he has been replying, so that is good," he added.
Iyer suffered an impact injury while trying to complete a catch during the third ODI, and not many would have guessed that the situation could become life-threatening for the Indian cricketer. However, an injury to his spleen, a vital organ responsible for filtering blood and fighting infections, meant things could have gone out of hand.
Iyer reportedly collapsed in the dressing room after leaving the ground as his vital signs dropped alarmingly. However, swift action from the BCCI medical staff ensured that no damage was done. The BCCI medical team diagnosed the injury well and immediately took the batter to the hospital, which saved his life.
“The team doctor and physio didn’t take any chances and took him to the hospital immediately. Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He’s a tough lad and should be fine soon,” a source was quoted as saying by PTI.
Meanwhile, Iyer's father, Santosh Iyer, has confirmed that the cricketer's family members won't be travelling to Sydney as he is on his path to recovery and might get discharged by the end of this week. Contrary to the reports suggesting his family members will travel to Sydney, Iyer's father revealed the cricketer is himself set to return by the weekend after he is discharged from the hospital.
