Virat Kohli set for Test comeback? BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia reacts to rumours
The BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has reacted to rumours that the board has approached Virat Kohli to make a comeback in Test cricket.
New Delhi: The BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has reacted to rumours that the board has approached star batter Virat Kohli to make a comeback in Test cricket. Rumours had been spreading in the Indian media that the BCCI might speak to Kohli about a possible return to the longest format, especially amid India’s poor form in red-ball cricket.
Team India recently lost a home series for the second time in two years, a result that many experts consider a massive blemish on India’s otherwise stellar home record. After losing two out of three home series, rumours in the media suggested that the BCCI might communicate with Virat, asking him to return in whites.
'Do not give weight to rumours'
In an interview with Aaj Tak, the BCCI secretary said that no request had been made to Virat Kohli regarding a reversal of his retirement decision from the format. He further added that the Indian board had not even initiated any discussion regarding this matter.
"What’s being said about Virat Kohli is just a rumour. There has been no conversation with Kohli about this. Do not give weight to rumours. Nothing of that sort has happened,” Devajit Saikia told AajTak.
Earlier, Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen also reacted to the rumours on the social media platform X and said that if Kohli and Rohit Sharma were interested in playing Test cricket, then they should most certainly be brought back into the mix.
Pietersen said that he doesn't always believe what he reads in the media or on social media, but if it’s half true that both Virat and Rohit are considering playing Test cricket again, then it needs to be taken very, very seriously.
"The survival of Test cricket is a hot topic of conversation and if the biggest stars in the game are wanting to play it again, they must play!" Kevin Pietersen wrote on X.
Kohli is currently featuring in just one format in international cricket after announcing his retirement from Test and T20I cricket. He notched up his 52nd ODI hundred against South Africa in Ranchi.
