Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped, Shardul Thakur to lead Mumbai in Ranji Trophy 2025-26
India all-rounder Shardul Thakur has been appointed as Mumbai's captain for the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season.
New Delhi: The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) announced the probable squad for the upcoming Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season. Senior all-rounder Shardul Thakur has been appointed as the captain after Ajinkya Rahane stepped down from his post earlier this year.
Thakur has picked up 302 wickets in 97 first-class matches, with best figures of 7/61 against South Africa in 2021. He has scored 2,688 runs, including two centuries and a highest score of 119.
"Shardul as the new Mumbai captain, was a unanimous choice. He attended the selection committee meeting today and is very excited and keen to take on the added responsibility," Mumbai Cricket Association secretary Abhay Hadap was quoted as saying by The Times of India.
Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped
Team India opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal has been excluded from the list of 24 probables. Earlier in May, the 23-year-old made a U-turn and requested the MCA to let him continue with Mumbai. Jaiswal was planning to move to Goa and play for the state, but ultimately changed his plans.
Jaiswal has played for Mumbai since his Under-19 days. He made his first-class debut for the state in 2019 and has played ten first-class matches for them since then, smashing 863 runs at an average of 53.93.
Ajinkya Rahane stepped down from the captaincy role last month, emphasising the importance of grooming a new leader for Mumbai. The Ranji season begins on October 15, with Mumbai taking on Jammu and Kashmir in their opening game.
