Deschamps justifies playing Dembele and Doue despite PSG duo’s injuries
France coach Didier Deschamps defends playing Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue despite injuries as PSG push for clearer medical protocols with the FFF.
New Delhi: French coach Didier Deschamps has defended his decision to field Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue during the recent World Cup qualifier despite both Paris Saint-Germain players suffering injuries.
The pair picked up injuries in Friday's 2-0 win over Ukraine, with Dembele sidelined for up to six weeks due to a hamstring strain and Doue expected to miss around four weeks with a calf problem. Their absence means PSG will likely be without two of their attacking options for the opening Champions League fixtures against Atalanta and Barcelona.
PSG reacted strongly and even sent a letter to the French Football Federation (FFF), accusing the national setup of overlooking medical warnings and calling for a more transparent protocol between the club and country. The Ligue 1 champions insisted the injuries were "serious and avoidable" and demanded greater collaboration to protect players in future international breaks.
"PSG not out opponents"
Speaking ahead of France's next qualifier against Iceland, Deschamps pushed back against criticism, insisting his staff handled the situation professionally. He said, "We did things in a professional and progressive way, as we always do with every player, taking into account how they feel." He added, "Unfortunately, this happened and it concerns two PSG players. But PSG is not our opponent, it never has been. Our only opponent is Iceland.”
Deschamps also brushed aside suggestions that the row might influence his selection of the other PSG players such as winger Bradley Barcola, for the upcoming clash. With a smile, he said, "Then I will have Bayern calling me about a player, Real Madrid calling. I'm the one who makes the decisions, I have my staff, my responsibilities. I always take into account the players' feelings."
Despite PSG's frustration, Deschamps stressed there was no conflict between the club and country. He expressed sympathy for Dembele and Doue but underlined that his medical team had assessed both thoroughly before allowing them to train and play.
The French coach reiterated that managing player fitness is always a delicate balance. Though for now he remains focused on steering France through their qualifying campaign with Iceland next on the schedule in Paris.
