EPL: Arsenal reclaim top spot, Liverpool edge past nine-man Tottenham Hotspur
Arsenal reclaimed the spot in the Premier League table after defeating Evertion 1-0, while Liverpool also edged past Tottenham Hotspur 2-1.
New Delhi: Arsenal beat Everton 1-0 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium to reclaim the top spot in the Premier League table on Saturday, January 21. Manchester City moved above the Gunners after defeating West Ham 3-0, but a brilliant penalty from Gyokeres helped them to take the lead again.
City's victory put them on 37 points, one more than Arsenal ahead of their late kick-off, but it only lasted for a few hours as Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres scored from the spot in the 27th minute of the match after a handball at a corner by Everton's Jake O'Brien.
Though the hosts pressed high throughout the game, but struggled to create goal-scoring opportunities, while Leandro Trossard should have secured the three points for Arsenal in the second half with a shot that hit the woodwork.
The win moves Arsenal to 39 points, two ahead of Manchester City, while Everton dropped to 10th position in the table with 24 points, and are behind Brighton on the goal difference.
Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Liverpool
Liverpool defeated nine-man Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 to move into the top 5 of the Premier League on Saturday. Xavi Simons received a straight red card in the 33rd minute of the game after a foul on Virgil Van Dijk.
Isak netted the first goal of the match in the 56th minute and was then forced off injured in the second half at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Ekitike continued his goal-scoring streak with a brilliant header in the 66th minute to net his fifth goal in the last three matches, putting Liverpool in a commanding position.
But the reigning Premier League champions struggled and gave away control to the hosts as substitute Richarlison pulled one back in the 83rd minute. Just as the Spurs looked dangerous, Cristian Romero received a second yellow card, which helped Liverpool ease their way to secure all three points.
In other Premier League matches, Newcastle and Chelsea played a 2-2 draw at St. James' Park, and Manchester City beat West Ham United 3-0 at the Emirates. Haaland scored a brace in the game and also surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo's tally of 103 Premier League goals by netting 104 in 114 matches.
Bournemouth and Burnley also played a 1-1 draw. Brentford defeated Wolves 2-0, while Brighton and Sunderland played a 0-0 draw at the American Express Stadium. Leeds United thrashed Crystal Palace 4-1 at Elland Road.
