New Delhi: Premier League champions Liverpool will take on FA Cup winners Crystal Palace in the Community Shield match at Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday, August 10. The Eagles ended a 120-year drought for silverware when they defeated Manchester City in the final of the FA Cup in May earlier this year.
However, Liverpool have managed to get the better of Crystal Palace 12 times in their last 16 matches. The Reds have already managed to win the Community Shield 16 times before and have shared it five times out of the 25.
The Reds are the current champions of the Premier League, winning it for the first time since the 2019/20 season. They have only won one Community Shield title since 2006. The Merseyside club will take on Bournemouth in their opening Premier League match, while Crystal Palace will face Chelsea.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has said that his team is considered title favourites because they won last season, and not because of the money they spent in the ongoing summer transfer window.
The Merseyside club has signed Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt, Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, Jeremy Frimpong and Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. The defending champions are also eyeing a move for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak.
Arne Slot's side has also sold players from the club, including Luis Diaz, Jarrell Quansah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Darwin Nunez. They also lost Diogo Jota, who passed away in a tragic car accident
Head coach Arne Slot told reporters ahead of the FA Community Shield match against Crystal Palace that it's completely normal that they are one of the favourites, because they won it last season. He further added that they brought in good players like all the other teams did, and this is what makes this league so nice.
"Every team in the Premier League is spending money. So if we are only favourites because we've spent a bit, I would see that as weird because we've lost a lot as well. But that we are favourites because we won it last season and we played so well, that's clear," Slot said.
