New Delhi: Declan Rice delivered a match-winning performance as Arsenal beat Bournemouth 3-2 to extend their Premier League lead to six points on Saturday, January 3. Rice netted a brace in the second half, helping the Gunners to secure all three points at Vitality Stadium.
Speaking after the match, Arsenal manager praised Rice and said that he is one of the best midfielders for him. Arteta further added that he doesn't know where the midfielder can stop, but he can still improve in many areas.
"For me, the ones that we have are the best and Declan is constantly adding things to his game, constantly adding things to his role in the team. He is such a pivotal player for us," he added.
Bournemouth took an early lead in the match when Evanilson scored in the 10th minute after a poor pass from Gabriel Magalhaes, before the defender made up for his mistake by scoring the equaliser in the 16th minute.
Rice then scored twice in the 54th and 71st minutes to put Arsenal on the cusp of victory, but a brilliant strike from Junior Kroupi in the 76th minute reduced the deficit, but it proved to be just a consolation.
John McGinn netted twice in the second half, and Ollie Watkins scored for the fourth time in three matches as Aston Villa defeated Nottingham Forest 3-1 on Saturday, provisionally taking second position in the Premier League table.
Villa, looking for their 11th consecutive home victory in all competitions, took the lead just before halftime as Morgan Rogers found Watkins at the edge of the box, and the England forward scored the opening goal with his right foot.
The hosts scored their second goal in the 49th minute when a cross from Matty Cash found McGinn, who netted with a left-footed flick. Morgan Gibbs-White scored the first goal for Forest, but McGinn netted again after he capitalised on some poor goalkeeping from John Victor to finish into an empty net in the 73rd minute.
Wolverhampton Wanderers beat West Ham United 3-0 to end their winless streak from the start of the 2025/26 Premier League season. They had set an unwanted record in the league by failing to win any match in their first 19 games, overtaking the 17-game winless start of Sheffield United in the 2020-21 season.
But after an encouraging draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford, Wolves completely outplayed West Ham. Jhon Arias netted the first goal in the fourth minute to put the hosts in front, and they doubled their lead when Hwang Hee-Chan converted a penalty in the 31st minute.
Mateus Mane scored the third goal in the 41st minute with a low shot as West Ham struggled, failing to register an attempt on target. Brighton and Hove Albion also defeated Burnley 2-0 at home on Saturday.
