The 28-year-old Englishman suffered the injury in the pre-season draw against Newcastle in South Korea last weekend. The injury marred Son Heung-min's farewell match on his home soil.

Following the match, Spurs manager Thomas Frank confirmed that the player had injured the same knee that forced him to sit out of the Europa League final victory against Manchester United in May.

Since returning from the pre-season tour in Asia on Monday, Maddison has undergone tests to determine the severity of the injury.

There were fears that Maddison's injury was a serious one, and those concerns have now come true.

Maddison scored 12 goals in 45 appearances for Spurs last season. He joined the North London club after leaving Leicester City in 2023.

He has seven England caps, the most recent of which came in 2024.

Double blow for Frank

Following Son's departure to MLS club Los Angeles FC, Maddison's injury news comes as a big blow for Frank, who has lost two key attacking players in his first season in charge.

It will be interesting to see if Spurs enter the transfer market for a new attacking midfielder.

Tottenham's failed move for Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White looks all the more unfortunate now. The London club has its task cut out to sign a top-class attacking player in such a volatile market.

Mohammed Kudus, who arrived from West Ham this summer, provides an option with his flexibility in terms of position in the midfield. However, Spurs could miss out on maximising his full potential by not playing him in his natural position.
