Under-fire Amorim makes bizarre claims on his future at Manchester United
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has admitted that emotion got the better of him during his post-match comments following the defeat to Grimsby Town.
New Delhi: Manchester United have failed to win their first three games of the 2025-26 season, including a Carabao Cup defeat against Grimsby Town on Wednesday. Head coach Ruben Amorim spoke to the media for the first time since the club's embarrassing exit from the Carabao Cup.
Ahead of Saturday's match against Burnley, the Portuguese manager admitted that sometimes his emotions can get the better of him. He said that sometimes he wants to quit the United job, and sometimes he wants to be at the club for 20 years.
"Sometimes I want to quit, sometimes I want to be here for 20 years. Sometimes I love to be with my players. Sometimes I don't want to be with my players. I need to improve on that. It is going to be hard," Amorim said in a pre-match press conference.
After the Carabao Cup exit, the Man United manager said that his players "spoke really loud" but he explained those remarks and said that every time the club will suffer a defeat in future, he's going to be like that. Amorim further added that sometimes he hates his players, sometimes he loves them, and this is his way of doing things.
"I am going to be like that. In that moment, I was so frustrated. You have experienced people talking about the way I should perform with the media, to be more calm. I am not going to be like that," he added.
Amorim further explained that they had a good pre-season and were playing better, but that kind of performance was disappointing for him. There were a few reports that Amorim will hold talks with United leadership during the September international break about his future.
'We need Mainoo'
The Man United manager also addressed the future of Kobbie Mainoo, who requested the club's leadership for a loan move this season to get some game time, but they rejected his request. Amorim also said that he wants the midfielder to stay.
"I want Kobbie to stay and he needs to fight for his place," said the United boss. "We need Kobbie. That is not going to change. The players not playing with be disappointed but everyone will have opportunities. You have to fight in the week," Amorim said.
