Wissa set for £55m move to Newcastle move a day after accusing Brentford of blocking exit
Newcastle completed the deal for Wissa hours after agreeing to sell Alexander Isak for a British record fee of £125m.
A day after accusing Brentford of blocking his exit from the club, Yoane Wissa is set to see his wish come true after Newcastle agreed a deal worth £55m for the striker on deadline day. Wissa dropped a bombshell statement on Sunday, slamming the Bees for "unduly standing in his way" of a move to the Magpies and urged the club to allow him to make a switch to the Tyneside club.
It seems his Instagram post has worked in his favour after both clubs reached an agreement for an initial £50m fee plus £5m in add-ons. The DR Congo forward is travelling to Newcastle to complete the medical and other formalities of the move.
Before accepting the latest bid, Brentford had rejected two previous offers for Wissa from Newcastle this summer.
The developement comes after Liverpool agreed a British transfer record fee of £125m to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle.
Newcastle strengthen attacking department
With no option but to let his star striker go, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is desperate to strengthen his attacking department. The move for Wissa comes after Newcastle completed the club record signing of striker Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart on a six-year contract last week.
The 28-year-old African player issued an explosive statement on Sunday, publicly condemning Brentford for blocking a move to Newcastle.
In a statement on Instagram, Wissa said: "I have stayed silent for much of the summer, but with just hours remaining of the transfer window I feel compelled to make it clear that I want to leave Brentford.
"I believe the club are unduly standing in my way despite a series of fair offers throughout the summer."
Brentford and Newcastle reopened the discussions to complete the deal before the 19:00 BST deadline.
The Bees, meanwhile, are set to lose their second attacking player, after Bryan Mbeumo left the club to join Manchester United for an initial £65 million last month.
Goalkeeper Mark Flekken moved to Bayer Leverkusen for £8m, while midfielder Christian Norgaard joined Arsenal in a £15m deal.
After losing Mbuemo, Brentford moved to complete a club record deal of up to £42.5m for forward Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth.
