New Delhi: 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic has denied retirement speculations, stating that he plans to continue playing into his 40s, like other sports icons LeBron James, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Tom Brady. The Serbian Tennis legend aims to emulate their longevity.
Djokovic, currently participating in the Six Kings Slam in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, highlighted that extending his career is a big motivation for him, expressing curiosity about how far he can push his limits.
He has faced several difficult challenges in recent years, failing to win a major title since the 2023 US Open. The former World No.1 emphasised that he wants to be part of the evolution of tennis over the coming years.
Novak Djokovic said that longevity is one of his biggest motivations, and he really wants to see how far he can go. The Serbian legend further added that Tennis can be transformed in the next couple of years, and he wants to be part of that change.
"If you see across all the global sports, Lebron James he is still going strong, he is 40, Cristiano Ronaldo, Tom Brady played until he was 40-something years old, it is unbelievable,” Djokovic told Riyadh Season.
Djokovic also said that Lebron, Ronaldo and Brady inspire him, and he wants to be playing when tennis is rejuvenated, and set the new platform that is going to go on for decades to come.
Djokovic has qualified for the semi-finals of all four Grand Slams this year but failed to enter the final each time. He recently participated in the Shanghai Masters, where he was defeated by Valentin Vacherot, who won the title by beating his cousin Arthur Rinderknech in the summit clash.
The 38-year-old has also been dealing with injury concerns over the last 18 months. Since losing the world No. 1 ranking to Jannik Sinner at the 2024 French Open, Djokovic has dropped out of the top five after a sensational 825 weeks at the top level.
