New Delhi: The Hockey India League has been dealt a blow with UP Rudras officially confirming their withdrawal from the competition. The franchise announced on Monday that financial hurdles have made their participation "untenable" despite their long-standing association with the event.
Team director Cedric D'Souza admitted it was a tough call to make, stressing that the decision was not taken lightly. “This was not an easy call. We value what the league has brought to Indian hockey, but sustainability challenges made continuation untenable. Our responsibility now is to direct resources where they can have the greatest long-term impact- grassroots development,” he said.
The Rudras have shifted their focus towards nurturing hockey at the foundational level. They plan to invest in structured school and community programs, building a scouting network and training initiatives that can spot and develop talent from an early stage. By channelling their resources, the franchise hopes to build a strong pipeline of players who can eventually make it to the highest level of the game.
Focus shifts to grassroots
The Rudras, in their statement, underlined the importance of creating opportunities outside the spotlight of the league. Their approach aims to ensure that hockey’s next generation receives access to proper coaching, facilities and development platforms. The franchise believes this pivot can have a more lasting impact on the sport in India than continuing in the league under financial strain.
The team's senior players echoed similar sentiments. Indian hockey vice-captain and UP Rudras star Hardik Singh said playing for the the franchise in the Hockey India League had been an honour. He thanked the fans for their support and noted that while the HIL journey ends for them, the commitment to hockey at the grassroots will remain stronger than ever. “Our fans have stood by us with unwavering loyalty. While this chapter closes, our dedication to hockey and to inspiring future athletes continues,” he added.
UP stalwart Lalit Upadhyay also reflected on the decision, saying that although it was disappointing to leave the league, the long-term focus on development is crucial. “The league has played an important role. Despite it coming to an end for us, our focus on developing the sport in Uttar Pradesh will continue. By channelling efforts into grassroots initiatives, we remain fully invested in Indian hockey’s future,” he said.
The UP Rudras' exit marks a significant moment for the Hockey India League, but their renewed focus on grassroots promises to leave a lasting impact on the sport's growth in the country.
