OpenAI launches ChatGPT shopping research tool to simplify holiday buying
OpenAI has launched a new "shopping research" feature in ChatGPT to help users make faster, easier product decisions ahead of the holiday season. The tool offers tailored recommendations using filters, buyer preferences, and a refined version of GPT-5 mini.
New Delhi: OpenAI has launched a new product known as shopping research in order to simplify holiday purchases among the ChatGPT users. The option will be activated each time a user poses a query about shopping and can now work on both free and paid plans on mobile and web. It takes users through the product options with the help of simple filters and provides recommendations that are generated by a refined version of GPT-5 mini.
The system works to be more like a personal shopper with suggested selections and follow-up messages to research more. Nevertheless, OpenAI cautions that not all the information, such as price and availability, is reliable and encourages people to check the information on the retailer websites. The firm is also working on Instant Checkout that is going to enable in-chat purchases with partner merchants.
How the new feature works?
Users are able to filter recommendations based on price, features, and intended use just like on retail websites. ChatGPT is also capable of remembering past choices with the option to save them (when remembered) and recommends similar products with buttons that indicate 'more like this' and 'not interested'.
OpenAI is not the only one here. Google has already introduced its own artificial intelligence-powered shopping features, and the Comet browser by Perplexity provides AI-based purchasing support. The actions are indicative of a rising trend of AI agents affecting the online shopping behaviour that is forcing the major e-commerce players to take the actions.
The ChatGPT Pro users will get even more customised suggestions through the buyer guides that will be created based on the previous chat history. OpenAI explains that these guides may suggest accessories or upgrades depending on what these users have already talked about that provide them with a more personalised shopping experience.
