Corrects without exception: Musk responds to X fact-checking Trump aides anti-India claim
Elon Musk defended X's fact-checking system after Peter Navarro, a US advisor, criticised India for buying Russian oil. Navarro's claims were fact-checked on the platform, prompting his outrage.
New Delhi: Billionaire Elon Musk has responded to US President Donald Trump's aide, Peter Navarro, who slammed him for X (formerly Twitter) fact-checking his anti-India post. Musk said the social media platform "corrects everyone without exception". However, he did not name Navarro in the post.
Musk wrote on X, "On this platform, the people decide the narrative. You hear all sides of an argument. Community Notes corrects everyone, no exceptions. Notes, data, and code is public source. Grok provides further fact-checking."
What did Peter Navarro say about India?
In recent times, White House trade advisor Peter Navarro has attacked India for buying Russian oil, which he says fuels Moscow's war in Ukraine, including the baffling claim that "Brahmins are profiteering” at the expense of common people in our country.
In the latest attack, he took to X and wrote, "FACTS: India highest tariffs cost US jobs. India buys Russian oil purely to profit/Revenues feed the Russia war machine. Ukrainians/Russians die. U.S. taxpayers shell out more. India can't handle truth/spins."
However, X's fact-checking note corrected him and said, "While India has some tariffs, the US has a trade surplus with it in services. The US also continues to import certain commodities from Russia, which is hypocritical." It added, "A very large chunk of Russian petroleum products is going to Europe so that oil prices don't shoot up and they can save their people from the grave consequences of inflation. The US is trading with Russia too."
Navarro called it a crap note and said, "Wow. @elonmusk is letting propaganda into people's posts. That crap note below is just that. Crap. India buys Russian oil solely to profiteer. It didn't buy any before Russia invaded Ukraine. Indian govt spin machine moving high tilt. Stop killing Ukrainians. Stop taking American jobs."
