New Delhi: US President Donald Trump and his administration have imposed 50 per cent tariffs on Indian goods, which have damaged bilateral ties between the two nations. And now, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove has attacked the US government over the issue.
Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove used the image of the viral car selfie of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin to accuse the US administration of damaging bilateral ties with India in recent times.
Kamlager-Dove held up the enlarged photo at a House committee session on US foreign policy, and said, "Trump's policies towards India can only be described as cutting our nose to spite our face,” and blamed the government for “real and lasting damage to the strategic trust and mutual understanding between our two countries." She added, “This poster is worth a thousand words. You do not get a Nobel Peace Prize by driving US strategic partners into the arms of our adversaries.”
Kamlager-Dove reminded everyone of coercive diplomacy's strategic cost and said, "Because let me be clear: being a coercive partner has a cost. Congress understands the stakes on a bipartisan basis. And I thank the chair for putting this on the record today." She said the Modi–Putin selfie denotes immense geopolitical consequences, and the US should take note of deepening relations between India and Russia.
Recently, Putin was in India for a two-day visit, and the selfie was taken then. PM Modi himself greeted the Russian President at the airport before the two departed together for a private dinner at the prime minister’s residence. Earlier, they shared a car ride during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in an Aurus sedan.
