‘Documents signed by autopen under Biden terminated’: Trump cancels several orders signed by predecessor
In 2005, the Justice Department had said that the US presidents need not sign all documents or bills by hand and may use an autopen for the purpose.
Washington: In a fresh attack against Joe Biden, US President Donald Trump announced that all documents signed by autopen under his predecessor. He added that all orders signed by autopen no longer remain effective.
It is noteworthy that Trump has on several occasions expressed his outrage. Biden's alleged use of an autopen to sign executive orders, pardons and other documents. He had accused his predecessor of being too ‘senile’ when in power.
What Biden wrote on social media?
"Any document signed by Sleepy Joe Biden with the Autopen, which was approximately 92% of them, is hereby terminated, and of no further force or effect," Trump wrote on social media. He added, "I am hereby cancelling all Executive Orders, and anything else that was not directly signed by Crooked Joe Biden, because the people who operated the Autopen did so illegally."
While various US presidents have also used autopen in the past, Trump has particularly targeted Biden over the issue. He said that the use of autopen by his predecessor proved that Biden was mentally incapacitated and not in control of the White House. Importantly, when Biden’s term ended, he was 82, and Trump is 79 currently. The current president is set to demit office in January 2029.
Since when the use of autopen started?
In 2005, the Justice Department had said that the US presidents need not sign all documents or bills by hand and may use an autopen for the purpose. Then, US President Barack Obama had signed a bill with the help of an autopen in 2011 for the first time, when he was in Europe, the New York Times had reported.
`During his last days in office, Biden had used an autopen to issue pardons against those targeted by Trump. Among them were Biden’s own son, lawmakers who probed Trump and a military general, and the US’s top COVID-19 expert.
