Fedora Man revealed: Teen behind viral Louvre mystery photo

The mysterious "Fedora Man" from the viral Louvre photo is 15-year-old Pedro Elias Garzon Delvaux from Rambouillet town in Paris. He recently gave an interview to the Associated Press and appeared just as he did in the viral photo: wearing a fedora hat, a waistcoat borrowed from his father, a jacket chosen by his mother, a tie, and Tommy Hilfiger trousers. On his wrist was a restored Russian watch, and the tilted fedora paid tribute to French Resistance hero Jean Moulin.

The mysterious “Fedora Man” from the viral Louvre photo has finally been identified. The sharply dressed figure who captured global attention after a heist at the museum is not an undercover detective or a digital creation, but 15-year-old Pedro Elias Garzon Delvaux from Rambouillet, a town in west of Paris.

Pedro discovered the image only after it had been viewed millions of times online. Instead of revealing himself immediately, the high school student who is also an admirer of fictional detectives like Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot, decided to let the mystery unfold. “I didn’t want to say right away it was me,” he said. “There was a mystery, and I wanted it to last a bit.”

When Pedro sat down for his first in-person interview with the Associated Press, he appeared just as he did in the viral photo: wearing a fedora hat, a waistcoat borrowed from his father, a jacket chosen by his mother, a tie, and Tommy Hilfiger trousers. In person, Pedro is cheerful and curious, unaware that a simple family outing would make him a global sensation.

The ‘moment’ that sparked frenzy

The image that brought Pedro fame was taken outside the Louvre shortly after thieves stole French crown jewels in broad daylight. The Associated Press photographer captured three officers standing beside a police car while Pedro, dressed in his vintage outfit, walked by. The scene, a nice blend of noir style and modern tension, quickly spread online.

Social media users named him “Fedora Man” and filled the internet with theories: was he a detective, a museum insider, or an AI creation? Some insisted the figure wasn’t real. Pedro understood the confusion. “I look like I’m from the 1940s, and it’s 2025,” he said. “There’s a contrast.”

Even family members were unsure until they recognized his mother in the background. Only then did they realize that the internet’s favourite “detective” was just a teenager on a family trip.

Pedro, his mother, and grandfather had simply gone to visit the Louvre, unaware of the robbery. “We wanted to go inside, but it was closed,” he explained. “We didn’t know about the heist.” As they asked police about the closure, the AP photographer snapped the now-famous shot. “I didn’t even notice when it happened,” he said.

Four days later, a friend texted him a screenshot asking, “Is this you?” The photo had already reached five million views. Soon, his mother called to tell him he had appeared in The New York Times. Relatives from Colombia and friends from Austria began sending messages and sharing the viral image. “Everyone said, ‘You’re famous,’” he laughed. “It’s amazing how one photo can make you go viral so fast.”

Pedro’s look explained

Pedro’s distinctive style isn’t a costume. He began dressing in classic suits about a year ago, inspired by old photographs of leaders and film detectives. “I like to look elegant,” he said. “I even go to school like this.” At his casual, no-uniform school, his appearance has started a quiet trend. “One of my friends wore a tie this week,” he said.

The fedora, however, is special. It’s reserved for weekends, holidays, and museum visits. To him, it symbolizes individuality and a love of history. He understands why people imagined he was part of the heist story. “When something strange happens, you don’t picture an ordinary detective,” he said. “You think of someone different.”

Pedro’s artistic upbringing may explain his sense of style. His mother, Félicité Garzon Delvaux, grew up in an 18th-century museum-palace, the daughter of a curator and a performer. She often takes Pedro to exhibitions. “Art and museums are living spaces,” she said. “Life without art is not life.”

Worldwide symbol of style & mystery

Pedro watched the online buzz quietly for several days before switching his private Instagram account to public. “I wanted people to find me on their own,” he said. When reporters eventually reached out, they were shocked to learn “Fedora Man” was only 15. Now, he’s taking the sudden fame in stride. “I’m waiting for someone to call me for a movie,” he joked. “That would be funny.”

Pedro’s picture was a reminder of how a single image can spark imagination. One photo turned him into a worldwide symbol of style and mystery. Meeting him confirms that behind the legend is a real teenager, amused by his accidental fame. “I guess I’m a star now. But I’ll keep dressing like this. It’s who I am,” he said with a grin.
