Glasgow: An Indian-origin nurse has been sentenced to seven years and nine months in jail for allegedly raping a colleague and sexually assaulting two others in Scotland. He was working in the country as a care home manager.

The accused Naijil Paul (47) was charged with these offences in 2018. He, however, fled the country a day before his trial began. Before fleeing Scotland, he had claimed that his father was ill. The incident allegedly took place when he was working at Acorn Park Care Home in Glasgow. The care home was later forced to close down.

A British national, originally from Kerala, he was later arrested in India and extradited to Scotland for trial. He was extradited after six years of evading trial. During the hearing at the Scottish High Court, Paul pleaded guilty of crimes. He was awarded a jail term on Monday.

The court not only banned him from going near victims, but he will remain on the list of sex offenders for life. In one of the cases, a 26-year-old colleague returned to work from sick leave in 2018. After returning, she said that the lack of money was an important factor in her returning back, as per ‘The Times of India’.

Days layer, Paul reportedly entered her office and told her that she was at risk of losing her job due to the time she was on leave. While trying to rape her , even put his hand on the hip of another nurse, subsequently molesting her.

‘Accused failed to take responsibility of his crimes’

While sentencing him, the judge said that the accused failed to take responsibility for his crimes. In one occasion, the accused claimed he was doing a favour to the woman, the judge noted further.
