Is Imran Khan alive? Former Pak PMs sister allowed to meet him in jail amid PTIs intense protests
Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan is alive and well, quashing widespread death rumours. He recently met his sister, Dr. Uzma Khanum, in Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail, as confirmed by Pakistani media.
New Delhi: There have been rumours of the death of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan. However, according to a report of Pakistani outlet The Dawn, he is alive and well, and has been allowed to meet his sister, Dr Uzma Khanum, by the authorities of Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail on Tuesday. The meeting reportedly happened in the afternoon as Khan's supporters staged massive protests across the country.
Notably, Khan's family was stopped from meeting him for several weeks as they sought proof from the authorities that he was alive. As Khanum entered the prison, numerous supporters of Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), gathered outside the complex.
The protests by PTI supporters
The supporters of Khan and his PTI have protested in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. As a result, officials in both cities have ordered the prohibition of large gatherings. However, followers still staged agitation outside the Islamabad High Court on Tuesday morning.
Reportedly, last month, Uzma and two other sisters of Khan, Noreen Niazi and Aleema Khan, were assaulted for asking to meet with him. It triggered massive protests in Pakistan, as both Khan’s son and sister publicly demanded evidence that he is alive.
On November 28, Imran's son Kasim Khan said the former PM has been held for 845 days and kept in solitary confinement in recent times. He said, "There have been no phone calls, no meetings and no proof of life. My brother and I have had no contact with our father."
Notably, the last time either Khan's family or PTI members had met him was 25 days ago. All these led to rumours that he might have died, and the authorities were covering it up to subdue protests by his followers. The 72-year-old politician, who had won the ICC ODI World Cup as the captain of Pakistan, has been in jail since August 2023.
