New Delhi: Iran is witnessing a tremendous unrest with people taking to the streets to protest against the current regime. Massive anti-government protests are taking place all over the country, with the situation escalating with each passing day.
Civilian protesters have reportedly set fire to a building of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) in Isfahan. People have thronged the streets of Bandar Abbas, the main city in southern Iran, and these show the amount of anger that common people in the country have against the government.
Meanwhile, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader, said on Friday that the Islamic Republic would not budge against the protests and linked the demonstrators to foreign powers. He said, “Everyone should know that the Islamic Republic will not retreat," he said. “It will not tolerate serving foreigners."
He also warned those 'working for outside forces'. Notably, the Iranian government has reportedly imposed an internet blackout. Also, Reza Pahlavi, the long-exiled son of Iran’s last shah, has called for more protests. Notably, the reign of the Shah was toppled in the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Iran's Supreme Leader also said that the protesters are “ruining their own streets to make the President of another country happy," referring to US President Donald Trump.
The security forces of the Iranian government are trying to suppress the protests with tear gas, live ammunition, and mass arrests. The unrest has killed at least 36 protesters so far, including children, and more than 2,000 people have been arrested. Meanwhile, the government has announced limited economic measures, including subsidies, but has also accused the protesters of being linked with the United States and Israel.
