Hof was born on April 20, 1959, and began experimenting with extreme cold as a teenager. He would sit in the snow for hours and even sleep outdoors during winter without a tent or sleeping bag. Over time, he realised he could control his body temperature and stay warm in extreme conditions.

This discovery led him to achieve incredible feats, including holding himself in ice water for nearly two hours, climbing Mount Everest shirtless and running a half marathon in the Namib Desert without water.

The Wim Hof Method

Hof believes that anyone can train their body and mind to handle extreme conditions. He developed the Wim Hof Method, a combination of breathing exercises, cold therapy and meditation.

According to his website, practising this method consistently can boost energy levels, strengthen the immune system, lower stress, improve sleep and reduce blood pressure.

Despite his achievements, Hof’s journey has been filled with personal struggles. In a Vice documentary, he shared that his wife took her own life, leaving him to raise their four children alone. Struggling with depression, he turned to cold exposure as a way to cope.

He described the cold as "merciless but righteous”.

Hof has broken several world records, including the fastest barefoot half marathon on ice/snow (2 hours 16 minutes) and longest full-body contact with ice (1 hour 53 minutes).

Though some of his records have been surpassed, he continues to inspire millions with his method. His work highlights the physical and mental health benefits of cold therapy which help people push past their limits.
