New Delhi: In some areas of Nepal that are close to its border with India, communal tension has triggered a high-security alert and a worrying situation.
A controversial viral video on social media triggered protests in Birgunj town of Nepal's Parsa district. The protests became violent, and the Parsa district administration imposed a curfew in Birgunj, which is located near Bihar's Raxaul district, threatening border security and peace.
Two men, reportedly Haider Ansari and Amanat Ansari, hailing from Dhanusha district, posted a video on social media allegedly insulting some religious communities. It triggered communal tension in the Dhanusha and Parsa districts, and locals handed them over to the police, saying the video threatened communal harmony.
But later, miscreants vandalised a mosque in Kamala's Sakhuwa Maran area. It triggered further communal tensions as people took to the streets in protest, during which Hindu organisations alleged that derogatory remarks were made against their deities.
The situation worsened as the protest became violent. The agitators allegedly pelted stones at the police and vandalised the local police station. The police said, "To control the situation, police personnel lobbed almost half a dozen tear gas shells at protestors," and a curfew has been imposed at Birgunj. The situation has forced many Indian migrant workers to return from Nepal.
Security has been increased along the India-Nepal border as the Sashastra Seema Bal has sealed the border. Indian security forces have halted the border movement of ordinary citizens, except for emergency services. Personnel on the Maitri Bridge connecting India and Nepal are on high alert, and every person using it is being thoroughly checked. There is also a dog squad team at the border. There is also heightened security in other border areas, including Sahadewa, Mahadewa, Pantoka, Siwan Tola, and Musharwa.
