New Delhi: A passenger airplane of Buddha Air in Nepal veered off the runway, while trying to land at the Bhadrapur airport on Saturday. There were 51 passengers on the plane and 4 crew members. The airline said that all passengers and crew are safe.
The plane came to Bhadrapur from the country's capital, Kathmandu. The plane which was involved in the incident was 9N-AMF and it was shown on the tracker as ATR 72-500 turboprop passenger aircraft.
The airline said that they have dispatched technical and relief teams from Kathmandu. They will check the aircraft and also help passengers who were inside the plane at the time of the incident. The aircraft overshot the runway some 200 metres off the ground, near a rivulet. It suffered minor damage during the incident.
Nepal has a very poor record in aviation safety. In July 2024, a Bombardier CRJ200LR of Saurya Airlines crashed soon after taking off from Kathmandu. This accident killed 18 people of the 19 onboard.
In January 2023 another plane crashed in Nepal. At that time it was an ATR 72 of Yeti Airlines. The plane crashed while attempting a landing at Pokhara airport. All 68 passengers and 4 crew members on board were killed in this aviation accident. A report regarding the plane crash blamed the pilot. It said that the pilot had accidentally feathered the engines, which led to folding the propelled blades in such a way that they could not generate proper thrust to help the plane land.
