Mexico City: Among the list of strange festivals from across the world, the Night of the Radishes might surely be at the top of the list. It is an art festival that involves the carving of radishes and takes place on the 23rd of December every year. The festival originated in the 16th century during the arrival of the Spanish missionaries to Mexico. They introduced the locals to the vegetable, and by the 1800s, carving radishes became a part of the local Christmas celebration.

The Oaxacan farmers carved the nativity figures with the vegetables. In 1897, the mayor of the location decided to make it a local event. During the competition, participants can select topics of their interest and carve radishes. They can take part in various categories such as traditional themes, kids’ entries, and free-style designs. From dragons to tall figures of people, participants are expected to complete the task within a few hours. All the radishes are supposed to be carved at the event.

The radishes required for the carving competition are produced separately. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the radishes are the star of the art festival.

The festival is accompanied by other activities like fireworks, music and parades. The fun Christmas festival attracts locals as well as tourists.
