Thousands gather in Greenland to protest Trumps threat, rallies organised in cities

Protesters were seen waving flags of Denmark and Greenland, shouting protests outside Copenhagen city hall and chanting slogans like 'Kalaallit Nunaat', which is the name in Greenlandic for the Arctic island.

Nuuk: Amid continuous threat by Donald Trump to take over Greenland, thousands of protesters took to the streets on Saturday to express their anger against the US President. Protesters organised rallies in several parts of Denmark, including Aarhus, Aalborg, Odense, and Greenland’s capital of Nuuk.

They were seen waving flags of Denmark and Greenland, shouting slogans outside Copenhagen city hall and chanting slogans like ‘Kalaallit Nunaat’, which is the name in Greenlandic for the Arctic island.

The demonstrations started amid Trump’s latest threats to impose 10 percent Tariff on countries opposing US control on Greenland from February 1. Countries that have opposed the US control over the region are Denmark, ‌Finland, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, among others.

As per the latest poll, published this January, 85 percent of the people in Greenland are against the region joining the US, while 6 percent have expressed their support. Some of the members of the Republican Party have also expressed their displeasure over Trump’s threats.

Congress delegation visits Greenland

A delegation of the US Congressmen visited Greenland on Friday. Speaking to reporters, they pointed out that the annexation not only threatens global stability but also US commitment to North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Speaking to Al Jazeera, one of the Congressman said, "Greenland is a part of Denmark. Denmark is our NATO ally. That should be the end of this discussion, in my view.”

Trump has accused Denmark of not doing much

In recent times, Trump has accused Denmark of not doing much to secure Greenland’s territorial waters in the Arctic. Meanwhile, several NATO members are deploying troops in Greenland for a military exercise. This is being done show that they will defend Greenland’s sovereignty”, French armed forces minister Alice Rufo had said earlier this week.
