Washington: Hinting that he would like to run for the presidency for his third time, US President Donald Trump on Friday shared an Artificial Intelligence-generated photo of himself holding a sign that said “Trump 2028, yes!”
It may be noted that the US President has earlier in the past too hinted at serving more than the US Constitution allowed. He had joked about the same in rallies and teased supporters wearing a hat that read ‘Trump 2028’.
Notably, the 22nd Constitution of the US does not allow any president to secure a third term at the Oval Office. It was in 2017 that Trump first became the president of the US. He could not secure his second term in 2020 as he was defeated by Democrat Joe Biden. However, he went on to enter White House by defeating Biden in the 2024 Presidential elections.
Last month, he had called the US Law not to allow him a third term as ‘too bad’. Trump had also said he won’t run for vice president. Speaking to reporters, Trump said he would be allowed to run for the vice president and added, “I wouldn't do that. I think it's too cute. Yeah, I would rule that out because it's too cute. I think the people wouldn't like that.”
Speaking to NBC News in May, he had said, “This is not something I'm looking to do,” adding, “I'm looking to have four great years and turn it over to somebody, ideally a great Republican, a great Republican to carry it forward.”
The US Constitution's 22nd Amendment was enacted in 1951. As per it, “no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.” Former US President Franklin D Roosevelt was elected to the presidential position for two more terms. He, however, during his fourth term in 1945. Six years after 1951, the 22nd Amendment was ratified, which included the two-term limit.
