Washington: Amid continuing war between Russia and Ukraine, US President Donald Trump said he was ready to back the bill to sanction countries doing trade with Moscow, including India. The legislation will be introduced by the Republicans, which would make it tough for any country doing business with Russia.
Trump had earlier accused India, China and a few other countries of buying crude oil from Russia, helping Moscow with its war against Ukraine. Speaking to reporters in Florida, he said, “ The Republicans are putting in legislation that is very tough, sanctioning, etcetera, on any country doing business with Russia.”
Notably, India and China are already under the US administration’s scrutiny for doing business with Russia. The US already considers India and China as Russia’s ‘primary funders’. Notably, while China has not yet been awarded tariffs so far, the US has imposed 25 percent Tariffs on India for buying crude oil from Russia. With this, the total Tariff imposed on India is 50 percent.
In August this year, Trump signed an executive order imposing 25 percent extra tariff on India over the purchase of Russian oil, doubling duties to 50 percent. As per the US, the step was taken to penalise the countries, which indirectly fund Russia’s war machine".
While India maintained that it would take steps based on its own benefits, Trump in October claimed that New Delhi had reduced purchases of crude oil from Moscow and that Washington would reduce tariffs at some point.
Notably, Russia has time and again shown that it was capable of sustaining military operations on a large scale despite sanctions by the US and European countries. Russia has been engaged in a war with Ukraine for the last three years.
