Beater cars are a great way to make sure that your good cars don’t see the brunt of abuse. They are usually cars which are cheap to run and maintain. The concept of beaters cars doesn’t really exist outside of an enthusiast's circle, mostly because they are usually the ones who are making cars with.

But having a beater car is still a good idea for those who have a lot of cars and need a city runabout, which they don’t have to crush their minds over. Here are 5 used beater hatchbacks for under Rs 3 lakh.

The Honda Brio is a great city runabout, which is also quite reliable and pretty zippy for what it is. A great thing about the Brio is that their are a lot of them available in the used market and it also came with a CVT option from the factory which is quite smooth. The 1.2L i-VTEC engine is also brilliant in terms of drivability and smoothness. 

The Ford Figo was a proper fun-to-drive hatchback. One thing that is going for the Figo is the availability of extremely affordable parts. These cars are easy to service and easy to maintain, despite the fact that Ford has left the Indian market. The first generation models came with either a 1.2L NA petrol or a 1.4L diesel which was highly efficient. The 2nd generation model got a 1.2L NA petrol, a 1.5L NA petrol with an automatic and a 1.5L diesel which was quite punchy. The Figo is not only an affordable beater car but also genuinely fun to drive as well. 

The Maruti Suzuki Celerio is just another Maruti Suzuki but we recommend the Celerio over Wagon R or Swift models because they are relatively inexpensive to buy in the used market.This is due to the popularity of the vehicle mostly but the Celerio is a pretty reliable and efficient vehicle. The Celerio also got an AMT option and a CNG option. 

The Honda Jazz is another brilliant buy in the used market. It comes with a 1.2L NA petrol i-VTEC engine which is pretty reliable and there was a CVT option as well. The Jazz is another very fun-to-drive hatchback and the best thing about it is the practicality. If you are looking for a Jazz in the used market, we recommend the models with magic seats. The Jazz is easily available in the used market at very good prices and not so many kilometres on the odo. 

The Toyota Etios Liva is a brilliant vehicle which is very affordable in the used market. Many people have forgotten about this car and that it exists but it was a pretty practical car which is also quite reliable. The Liva was available with either a 1.2L NA Petrol or a 1.4L diesel engine, both of which are pretty good. There was unfortunately, no automatic variants of the Etios Liva or its sedan version, the Etios.
