Luxury gets cheaper: Audi, BMW and Mercedes announce price slash

With GST 2.0 announced, the prices of luxury brands like Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz have seen a significant price cut across their portfolio.

New Delhi: Luxury can makers, BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz have announced heavy benefits for potential customers, offering a massive relief. In the previous rates, luxury cars attracted a total of 50 per cent taxes. This included the 28 per cent GST along with 22 per cent condensation cess. However, after the GT Council’s announcement on September 3rd, all luxury vehicles see a 40 per cent rate without any cess.

In the Mercedes-Benz portfolio, the flagship model, the S-Class 4MATIC, comes with a maximum reduction of Rs 11 lakh and is now priced at Rs 1.88 crore. The GLS 450d AMG Line have reduced the price by Rs 10 lakh, down to Rs 1.34 crore, while the GLE 450 4MATIC has an Rs 8 lakh reduction.

In the mid-range models, the E-Class series is coming with reductions in cost somewhere between Rs 5.5 lakh and Rs 6.2 lakh. The A-Class is now Rs 2.6 lakh less and will now be priced at Rs 45.95. The GLA 220d 4MATIC AMG Line’s price has been reduced by Rs 3.8 lakh and is now going to cost Rs 52.70 lakh. The GLC 300 4MATIC is a popular car and is now priced at Rs 73.95 lakh, decreasing price by Rs 5.3 lakh. 

BMW have slashed their prices by Rs 9 lakh in savings with the X7 coming down to Rs 1.25 crore, while the X5 is now priced at Rs 93.7 lakh. The smallest SUV in the portfolio, X1, has a reduction of Rs 1 lakh and is now priced 50.6 lakh.

In the sedans, the BMW 5 LWB has a price drop of Rs 4.10 lakh, resulting in a cost of 72.4 lakh, while the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe has a drop by Rs 1.6 lakh, costing 45.3 lakh, and the BMW 3 LWB sees a slash of Rs 3.4 lakh and is now priced at 60.5 lakh. The electric variants will not have any price cuts as they don’t come under the 40 per cent taxation and continue with the 5 per cent GST rates. 

Audi have also revised their prices across their lineup following GST 2.0 being implemented. The Audi Q8 SUV has a price cut of Rs 7.8 lakh. The Q3 will see a cut down of Rs 3.07 lakh, with the A6 sedan having a price cut of Rs 3.64 lakh. The brand felt that the updated price makes them more accessible, gaining traction before the festive season.

How GST 2.0 affected Luxury EV

Mercedes-Benz in their annual financial report, have said that EVs make up seven per cent of their total sales, with the EQS coming as the best seller. The BMW more recently said that they sold 5,000 EVs in the country in the first six months of the year, with MINI and BMW selling 1,322 EVs. The iX1 LWB, made-for-India, is the best-seller.
