New Volkswagen T-Roc is set to boost the brand’s sales
The Volkswagen T-Roc's second generation is expected to continue its selling pace, retaining the same design elements and powertrain and is being looked at as the Golf of the SUV from the brand.
New Delhi: Since the Beetle was discontinued, it was the Golf that dominated Volkswagen’s sales charts. However, it is seeing a close competition from the SUV counterpart, the T-Roc. Since making its debut in 2017, it has already sold two million units, and now the second generation has officially been unveiled. Design-wise, the T-Roc is more or less the same.
Quintessentially a crossover of the Golf, the T-Roc sits between the T-Cross and the Tiguan in the SUV lineup of the company. The new generation has expanded a little, measuring 4373 mm in length, with the wheelbase now stretched to 2631 mm. It comes with the usual goodies on the outside, with front and rear light bars, gargantuan fake exhaust tips, illuminated badges, and a lot of black trim.
Volkswagen T-Roc interior and features
It comes with large screens on the inside to replace physical controls, with VW’s touch slider being inserted as well. Most of the climate functions are through the touchscreen, which is either in the 10.4-inch or 12.9-inch. The brand has, though, said that they will be re-introducing physical buttons for frequently used functions.
VW have also gone for a column-mounted shifter and hence done away with the six-speed manual gearbox. It will be sold only as a dual-clutch automatic transmission.
VW is still keeping the same drivetrain lineup, and the options will be a 1.5-litre mild-hybrid engine that will make 114 bhp in the base model and 148 bhp in the higher variants. Both will be mated with a seven-speed DSG that will send power to the front wheels. There are even two hybrid powertrains that are being made for the future.
For all-terrain capability with 4Motion, it will come with a larger 2.0-litre engine, which will be offered with or without mild-hybrid tech. At present, a full T-Roc isn’t in the scheme. The efficiency should be improving because of a fall in the drag coefficient by ten per cent. While as standard it will come with 19-inch tyres, customers do have the option of 20-inch alloys.
There’s also a performance-driven R version to be launched in 2027 and will come with the 2.0-litre turbo-four. While it is set to hit the European showrooms in November this year, there’s no news on whether it is coming to India.
