Registration renewal for vehicles above 20 years doubled
The move is trying to phase out vehicles that are causing pollution with prices for 20-year-old motorcycles and cars would cost Rs 2,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively.
New Delhi: The government have notified that there will be a huge surge in registration renewal charges for vehicles that are older than 20 years, doubling existing rates, as reported by The Economic Times. According to the new rule, the renewal of registration for motorcycles and cars over 20 years old would cost Rs 2,000 and Rs 10,000, respectively. The charges for renewing the registration of vehicles that are more than 15 years old but less than 20 years old are still the same.
The move aims to disincentivise people from keeping vehicles manufactured before BS-II emissions came into play. While the Road Transport Ministry, in its draft notification issued in February, proposed increasing renewal fees for commercial medium and heavy vehicles over 15 years old, at Rs 12,000 and Rs 18,000, respectively, the transport organisation opposed the step.
The ministry had even proposed to double the renewal fees for registration of commercial medium and heavy vehicles that are older than 20 years to Rs 24,000 and 36,000, respectively. Media sources said that this is still in abeyance and the government will take their next step at a later time.
The changes come barely a week following the SC barring authorities from temporarily taking action against petrol vehicles that are older than 15 years and diesel vehicles that are older than 10 years in Delhi and NCR.
