Toyota GR Supra track-focused version gets V8 engine
Toyota GR Supra's track-focused version will take the 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine from the Lexus LC 500, RC F and the 2019 Dakar-winning HiLux rally truck and will be limited to just six units.
New Delhi: Toyota GR Supra’s road-legal car might be heading to retirement, but the track-focused version still has some steam left. The Toyota GR Supra has been fitted with a naturally aspirated V8 engine and race-ready design. While the V8 doesn’t make its way to the road, it is being made in particular for Australia’s Supercars Championship in 2026, lining up with the likes of Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang V8.
The Toyota GR Supra powered by the V8 will come with a reworked 5.0-litre naturally aspirated engine, used by Lexus LC 500, RC F and the 2019 Dakar-winning HiLux rally truck and features an all-aluminium quad-cam unit. The auto OEM had previously given a sneak peek into the project this year, and now again, Toyota have given a small clip on Instagram.
The V8 is a big shift from the six-cylinder configuration road-specific GR Supra, the engine that is sourced from BMW, which includes both the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder and turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine.
Along with the V8, the Toyota GR Supra Gen3 supercar also gets an aggressive aero kit and upgrades with a racing chassis. It also gets a custom body kit designed by Toyota Australia, setting it apart from the other racing versions. Further, the GR Supra also gets wider fenders, a larger rear wing and a more prominent splitter. It will also have a set of 18-inch alloy wheels fitted with slick tyres and much more beefed-up APR racing brakes.
Toyota have said that the supercar production will be limited to six units. Two will be with the Walkinshaw Andretti United, while four will be with Brad Jones Racing. Toyota GR Supra GEN 3’s first prototype is going to appear in Sydney on September 1st before debuting in the Bathurst 1000 race between October 9-12th.
