Bengaluru: A 65-year-old woman in Bengaluru narrowly escaped with her life after her former driver allegedly masterminded a violent robbery at her home on Sunday night. The assailants stabbed her twice before fleeing with valuables, but quick-thinking by her and her neighbours managed to save her life and apprehend one of the attackers.
The incident, as reported by Times of India took place in Syndicate Bank Colony, Banashankari III Stage, around 9.30 PM. The victim, identified as Kanakapushpa, was alone when she heard a knock at the door. A man, disguised as a delivery agent, claimed her son had ordered food for her. As soon as she opened the door, three men forced their way in.
The intruders immediately demanded access to cupboards and almirahs belonging to her son, Rahul, a real estate businessman who was not at home at the time. They gagged the woman and pushed her onto a sofa, threatening her with dire consequences if she resisted. When she told them she did not have the keys, one of the men stabbed her in the neck in an attempt to force a confession.
In the midst of the assault, she recognised the ringleader as her son’s recently dismissed driver, known locally as Maddy. He had been fired after repeatedly pestering the family for money. According to investigators, the resentment over his dismissal appears to have driven him to plan the attack.
When Kanakapushpa insisted she did not have the keys, Maddy allegedly ordered another stabbing, leaving her with a second deep wound. Summoning remarkable composure, she feigned death by lying motionless and closing her eyes while the gang broke open the cupboards with iron rods. They ransacked the house until about 10.45 PM before calmly preparing to leave. One attacker even prodded her to confirm she was lifeless, and, convinced she was, they walked out with the stolen goods.
Despite her severe injuries, the elderly woman managed to stagger to the door and cry out for help. Neighbours rushed in, capturing one of the culprits while the others escaped.
Police have since confirmed Maddy’s involvement and believe revenge and financial desperation were the primary motives. A manhunt has been launched to track down the two remaining suspects.
