New Delhi: India is all set to launch its first-ever semi-high-speed sleeper train, Vande Bharat Sleeper. The train's second rake was recently dispatched to Indian railways. Engineered by the Bharat Earth Movers Ltd from Bengaluru, the train is likely to remain at the SMVT railway station for a few days.
The trains have been designed specially for long distance journeys, ranging from 800-1000kms. The sleeper version retains the high-acceleration and potential top speeds of up to 160 km/h seen in existing chair-car Vande Bharat trains, although actual operating speeds will depend on the rail infrastructure along its assigned route.
The rake comprises 16 air-conditioned coaches, including irst, second and third AC classes, similar to configurations used in premium long-distance trains. While the exact inaugural service route has yet to be officially announced, the Northern Railway zone is expected to operate the sleeper service, covering major cities across several states including Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.
Officials have noted that minor technical tweaks may still be needed before final clearance, but they believe the first commercial services could be ready soon. Plans call for a total of 10 sleeper rakes, sufficient to operate five dedicated sleeper services, with additional units to be finalized in the coming months.
As anticipation builds, BEML and Indian Railways continue their preparations to bring the new Vande Bharat Sleeper trains into passenger service, potentially delivering a “New Year gift” for travellers seeking faster, more comfortable overnight journeys.
