New Delhi: Two days after implementing a ban on dispensing fuel to the end of life (EoL) vehicles in the national capital, the Delhi government revoked the ban amid severe backlash from old vehicle owners. Several owners of such vehicles criticised the government’s move and said that the government should give more time to phase out the vehicles and find alternative options.

After the ban, several EoL vehicle owners also sold their expensive cars at throw away prices. Facing severe backlash, the Delhi government has put the ban on hold for now.

Severe backlash from EOL vehicle owners

Announcing the change on Thursday, Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said that end of life vehicles will not be impounded in Delhi. Sirsa said, “The Delhi CM has said that EoL vehicles will not be impounded arbitrarily in the city. At the same time, we are committed to check pollution levels in Delhi."

Siraa further said, “The city residents are facing issues regarding old vehicles. The Delhi government has written to the Chairman of CAQM and informed that at present, we lack the necessary infrastructure to implement the policy."

He added that the policy will not be successful as owners of EoL vehicles were getting fuel from neighbouring cities like Faridabad, Noida, Gurugram, and others. Besides, the Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras, and loudspeakers are defunct at several places, said Sirsa and added, “There are several technical glitches, and the government has no real-time system in place to notify citizens about their vehicles being marked as EOL."

Infrastructural gaps stall plan

Writing to CAQM Chairman, the Delhi government highlighted that there were several infrastructure gaps, and also lack of data integration across Delhi NCR to implement the ban. Sirsa added that the Delhi government is also developing a system to apprise the EOL vehicle owners in advance.

However, Sirsa added that only CAQM can officially decide whether the policy should be withdrawn or paused. The ban on dispensing fuel to EOL vehicles was implemented with an aim to phase out old polluting vehicles and curb air pollution in Delhi.
