New Delhi: A couple in Ghaziabad allegedly killed their 48-year-old landlady after she asked them to pay rent which was due for the past six months. The tenant couple, Ajay Gupta and Akriti Gupta, brutally killed the landlady and chopped her into pieces and hid her body parts in a suitcase, police said.
The incident took place at Aura Chimera residential society in Rajnagar Extension on Wednesday. The tenant couple were arrested after the woman's family file a complaint against them.
What happened when owner confronted couple over unpaid rent
According to reports, the landlady, identified as Deepshikha Sharma, went to the couple's flat on Wednesday to collect rent, which had been pending for the last six months. When Deepshikha, a teacher by profession, confronted them and the accused couple refused to pay the money and got into a heated argument with her.
As the altercation escalated, the couple allegedly hit the landlady on her head with a pressure cooker and then strangled her with a dupatta (scarf). They then dismembered her body, put the body parts into a suitcase, and hid it under the bed to avoid suspicion, police said.
How a gruesome crime came to light
The matter came to light after the landlady did not return home on time. Deepshikha's domestic help, Meena, started looking for her after she did not reach home for hours and went to the tenant's flat to check if she was there. As the accused couple gave her a vague response, she checked the CCTV footage of the building. Upon examining the footage, Meena found that the landlady entered the tenant couple's flat in the evening but was not seen leaving the house. The police were then called.
Couple arrested
The couple, in the meantime, tried to flee the spot with a huge suitcase. The domestic help and other residents stopped them from leaving the building till the police arrived. Later, police reached the spot and searched the couple's flat and found Deepshikha's body in the suitcase. The couple was taken into custody by the police and interrogated. The couple was later arrested and a case was registered against them under the relevant sections of law. Police said further investigation in the case is underway.
