The need for an extended Metro network has been a topic of discussion for years, but it wasn’t until July 2022 that the Union Cabinet formally approved the project. Now spearheaded by the Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation Limited (HMRTC), the initiative is backed by a combination of funding sources:

  • Rs 896.19 crore from the central government
  • Rs 1,432.49 crore from the Haryana state government
  • Additional financial support from international agencies and local bodies

With Gurugram’s roads increasingly clogged with traffic, the project is designed to encourage more residents to shift from private vehicles to public transport, reducing emissions and improving air quality.

Key stops between Huda City Centre to Cyber City route

The extended Metro line will link some of Gurugram’s busiest commercial and residential hubs, offering a much-needed alternative to road travel. Starting at Huda City Centre, it will pass through major locations such as:

  • Subhash Chowk
  • Hero Honda Chowk
  • Udyog Vihar (Phases 4, 5 & 6)
  • Cyber Park and Cyber City
  • Key sectors including 45, 47, 48, 72A, 23A, 22, 10, 37, 9, 7, 4, 5, and 3
  • Basai Village, Palam Vihar, and Bajghera Road

Additionally, a spur line will connect to Dwarka Expressway (Sector 101), improving connectivity between Gurugram and Delhi.

Rapid Metro: Key features and specifications on new route

The Metro will run on a standard gauge track, utilising Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology for efficient operations. Trains will reach speeds of up to 80 km/h, with an average speed of 34 km/h, ensuring fast transit across the city’s growing urban landscape.

Initially, trains will operate with three coaches, with provisions to expand to six coaches in the future to accommodate rising demand.

Project timeline and completion date

While the project is now officially underway, there is still a long journey ahead. Geotechnical surveys for the first 13 kilometers have been completed, and tendering for consultancy and civil works is in progress. The real action begins in May 2025, when full-scale construction is expected to commence. If all goes according to plan, Gurugram’s new Metro line will be operational by 2029.

Daily ridership and passenger capacity

Once launched, the Metro is projected to serve 5.34 lakh passengers daily, with ridership numbers expected to grow to:

  • 7.26 lakh by 2031
  • 8.81 lakh by 2041
  • 10.70 lakh by 2051

Beyond numbers, the Metro expansion represents a major shift in how Gurugram functions. Reduced congestion, lower pollution levels, and improved connectivity are set to make the city a more attractive destination for businesses and residents alike.

For a city that has experienced rapid urbanisation but struggled with infrastructure challenges, this project marks the beginning of a new era in public transport. As Gurugram gears up for this transformation, one thing is certain commuting in the city is about to get a whole lot better.
