Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will conduct a mega electronic waste cleanliness drive across the city on January 12, 13, covering 300 wards, as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission.
The initiative aims to create widespread awareness among citizens on the importance of responsible disposal of electronic waste and to ensure systematic collection, segregation, and scientific disposal of e-waste from residential, commercial, and public areas, a press release from GHMC said.
The drive will focus on collecting a wide range of discarded electronic items, including large and small household appliances, IT and telecom equipment, consumer electronics, batteries, UPS systems, and other electronic accessories.
E-waste to be processed at processing facility in Dundigal:
GHMC officials stated that the drive will be implemented in coordination with HiMSW Limited, which will deploy dedicated, branded e-waste collection vehicles in every circle. The collected e-waste will be safely transported and processed at the authorised e-waste processing facility at Dundigal, in accordance with e-waste management rules.
Awareness campaigns for public participation:
To ensure effective public participation, awareness campaigns will be conducted from January 9, involving sanitation workers, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), NGOs, and Self-Help Groups. Temporary collection points have been identified in each ward for seamless operations during the drive.
GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan has directed Zonal Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners, and sanitation officials to mobilise all stakeholders and ensure the successful execution of the drive. The civic body has also instructed its Public Relations wing to ensure wide publicity and media outreach for the initiative.
Officials reiterated that proper management of e-waste is critical to safeguarding public health and the environment, and urged citizens to actively participate in making Hyderabad a cleaner and greener city.
