Hyderabad Metro: 20 transgender people appointed as security personnel

Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) has brought on  board 20 transgender security personnel after completing induction security training, a press statement said.

The security personnel joined duty on Monday at select metro stations and in metro trains. The move is aimed at highlighting the state government’s commitment to inclusion, dignity and equal opportunity.

One of the most advanced urban transport systems in the country, the Metro Rail serves around 5 lakh passengers daily with 57 stations across three corridors. Out of these, around 30 per cent are women, and their safety, comfort and trust are of utmost importance to the Metro Rail system.

Officials say that this initiative will not only strengthen the safety environment for women passengers but also stand as a symbol of social empowerment. The newly appointed personnel will be available to take security measures in general and women-only coaches, provide directions to passengers, provide information and necessary assistance.

The scanner operations will be monitored to ensure that passengers travel comfortably and safely. They are also involved in street-level and concourse security. Hyderabad Metro Rail is committed to providing safe and efficient mobility to its passengers. The appointment of transgender personnel in the security department will not only strengthen the safety of women passengers, but also stand as a powerful signal of social empowerment, the release said.
