Hyderabad Police Commissionerate has launched ‘Operation Kavach’ to ‘bolster law and order’ on Friday night at 10.30 pm, CP VC Sajjanar said in a statement.

“This special drive involves a collaborative mobilisation of the Law & Order, Traffic and Task force wings, augmented by the Armed Reserve, Blue Colts, and patrolling teams,” the statement read.

The drive has been launched with an aim to check alleged drug trafficking, hawala transactions, unauthorised transportation among others.

VC Sajjanar leads vehicle checking in old city:

On Friday night, VC Sajjanar led the vehicle-checking drive near Gulzar House in Old City.  He inspected 25 vehicles and questioned motorists during the field operation. Some motorists were detained on suspicion and were taken to the police station for further verification.

The commissioner later moved to Telangana Command Control Centre, where he monitored city wide surveillance feeds and coordinated with senior officers, who were deployed at different sites.

The checkpoints were reportedly strategically chosen and they included major traffic zones, crime prone zones, high-risk corridors. The operation is reportedly aimed at tracking and disrupting movement of narcotics, unaccounted cash and criminal operatives during late hours.

Random inspections, identity verification have been carried out across all zones, officials said.

Police officials said that such large scale surprise operations will be conducted regularly as part of a strategy to keep criminal activities in check.

Critics dub operation as harassment:

Meanwhile, legal expert Srinivas Kodali has said that the sole purpose of such operation is public harassment.

“Only in Hyderabad we have military inspired policing of "operations". Operation Smile, Romeo, Chabutra, Cordon & Search. The latest Operation Kavach. The police should call themselves a militia with sole purpose of public harassment, whatever it's undisclosed aims.”
